A Claude Code second brain is 1 folder your AI reads first, every time. That way your AI knows who you are, what you run and what you already decided. Every guide on page 1 hands you a folder template to start clean. Nobody starts where a real business owner is. 4 AIs. 18 code folders. 43 side copies of his own work he could not see. I fixed that 1 in 4 moves and no code moved. Watch it here, then read the short version below.
What Is a Claude Code Second Brain?
It is 1 folder with a map on top. The map is a text file called CLAUDE.md. The rules in the map hold as long as Claude remembers them. That is why the next move after the map is Claude Code hooks for small business. Claude Code opens the map before Claude says a word to you. So Claude walks in knowing what the business is and where everything lives.
You may hear it called an AI second brain. It means your AI has somewhere to read from, so you stop being the file. Under the map sit 3 more text files. A desk file that says what is true right now. A decisions file with 1 line per decision. A small folder that says who you are.
That is the same folder system I use to organize a business for AI. The method is Jake Van Clief's Interpretable Context Methodology, ICM. I run it in public.
Why Does Claude Code Drift, Leak, and Make You Repeat Yourself?
Because it has no desk and no map. A Marine named Mason messaged me at 5 in the morning. Master electrician. Bodybuilder. Building homes. Running all of it through AI. He sent 3 screenshots. A notes vault with 4 AIs in it, each with its own status page. 12 side copies of his work stacked in Claude Code, every 1 named like a different job. 5 project folders he bounced between.
I named the 3 symptoms off the pictures and he wrote back 1 word. YES.
Drift. Your AI starts a job and wanders. No file says what the job is for. So your AI guesses, and every guess drifts a little further.
Leak. You decided something last Tuesday. Today your AI does not know. The decision lived in a chat, and a chat is not a file.
Repeat. So, my business is. For the 40th time. You are the file.
Anthropic's own Claude Code memory docs say it from the other side. What Claude reads at the start of a session is a file. Everything else is gone when the chat closes.

That is the first frame of the video. His folder on September 8th. A 130 line start file with rules mixed in. Code folders inside it. No desk file. No decisions file. No list of the 43.
How Do You Build a Second Brain From the Mess You Already Have?
You do not start with a template. You start with a map of what you have, and your own AI draws it. 4 moves. Each move writes 1 file, and a person reads it before the next move starts.
Move 1, the interview. Your AI asks you 1 question at a time until you have answered them all. What do you run. Where does each thing live. Which AI knows what. Your AI reads everything back to you. You fix what is wrong. Then your AI writes the record. Only your words go in it.
Move 2, the map. Your AI turns the record into 1 page. Every business. Every place your files sit. Every AI. Every side copy. Counted. Where the record says unknown, the map says unknown. Mason did not know he had 43 side copies until the map counted them.
Move 3, the proposal. The smallest folder that holds the map, drawn as a picture with a why line beside each piece. It creates nothing and moves nothing.
Move 4, the move. Nothing moves before you approve a map of what moves where. Copy a business in. Read 3 of the copies. Then and only then delete the originals. Every decision trapped in a chat gets 1 line in the decisions file. Then the cold walk test. A fresh AI opens the folder and reads only the start file. Then that AI has to find its way to 1 real job with no help.
The first 2 moves are free and your own AI does both. The starter folder that runs them is under the video at filesnfolders.com/brain-interview.
What Can the AI Not Do On Its Own?
It cannot read its own map and see what is wrong with it. That is the human's job, and it is the move most second brain guides skip.
I read Mason's 3 files and caught 3 things his AI missed. The folder had landed in his Downloads instead of his brain folder, and the step failed quietly. The interview ran in a side copy, not the real folder. His start file was 130 lines and the fix was pushed to later, when the start file was the drift fix and had to move up.
None of that is a smart AI problem. His AI did what it was told and reported back clean. Somebody has to read the map and say that is not right. It is the same reason a multi agent workflow rots. 7 agents with no map is 7 guesses.
What Does the Folder Look Like After?
16 new files. 2 new folders. Nothing moved. Nothing deleted. Not 1 of his 18 code folders touched.
His start file went from 130 lines to 46. Routes only. Rules in their own file. Limits in their own file.
The 43 side copies are listed per code folder. Visible, not merged, not deleted. When his AI finally read all 43, only 3 decisions were still trapped. For 24 mornings straight his coach project made him write a log, and the log had already carried the rest.
The cold test ran the night before I recorded. A fresh AI found its way to a real job with no help. It passed.
Does This Work With Cowork Too?
Yes, because the brain is a folder and not an app. Claude Code walks the folder for the map on its own. Cowork has to be handed the map with 1 line. I showed both doors reading the same folder in Claude Cowork vs Claude Code. Build the folder once, and every door you open reads the same map. The same folder is where the Claude Code skills a small business runs on live, 1 text file per job.
Where Do You Start Tonight?
Make a folder on your Desktop called my-brain. Drop the starter zip in it and extract it. Open Claude Code on that folder and paste the 1 line from the read me. It asks you question 1. Answer in your own words. When the questions run out, it draws your map.
Then you can see it. Then you can fix it. When your map comes back, post it in the Build Market Close community and I will tell you which of the 4 moves to run first.
When the second brain is built, the same folder shape turns every video into a lesson with files. That is the next post: a YouTube to Skool classroom with Claude Code in under 10 minutes.
