Yes, you can build your own CRM with AI, without writing a line of code, and it costs closer to a hundred dollars a month in AI tooling than the $150,000 everyone assumes. I know because I did it. I am a 15-year sales closer, not a developer, and the CRM this blog runs on is the one I built. I put the whole build on video, watch it here, then read the short version below.
Why Would You Build Your Own CRM Instead of Renting One?
Because the math stopped making sense. GoHighLevel's Agency Pro plan is $497 a month. Over 5 years that is $29,820 off their own pricing page, before usage: metered emails, per-segment SMS, a penny per workflow execution, $97 a month for AI per sub-account. Real users report $297 signups invoicing at $450. Call it $600 a month all-in and you are staring at $36,000. I walk that math on the video's opening, and the full teardown lives in what GoHighLevel really costs.
That bill never buys you the thing itself. Stop paying and the funnels, automations, and pipelines you built all vanish. You were a tenant. If you have already gone shopping for a way out, you found lists of GoHighLevel alternatives that are all just different landlords.
What Does It Actually Cost To Build a CRM With AI?
Two honest numbers. The AI that builds it: I signed up for Claude Code's $20 plan one morning and outgrew it by the afternoon, so figure $100 a month while you are actively building. The infrastructure it runs on: nearly free. Google Cloud, GitHub, and Vercel free tiers are so large a small business will never cross them. My real hosting bill runs about a dollar a week.
The $150,000-and-a-dev-team number everyone believes is the lie the platforms need you to believe. It was true in 2015. It is not true now. I break down my real costs at 10:35 in the video, receipts on screen.
How Do You Start Building Without Knowing How To Code?
You start smaller than a CRM, and you start today. In the build section of the video I take a first website from nothing to live on the internet, free, with three tools:
- Claude Code writes and edits the actual code. You talk to it like a person: "build me a page that does X." It does not care that you cannot code. I cannot either.
- Git + GitHub holds your code, versioned, yours. This is the deed.
- Vercel puts it on the internet, free tier, in about two minutes.
Once the first page is live the wall is gone, and a CRM is just more pages: contacts, a pipeline, a calendar, forms. You add one room at a time to a building you own. I published all 9 of my page-building skills for Claude Code free, no opt-in, so you can start with the exact tooling I use.
Is Building Your Own CRM Right For You?
Honest answer: not everyone should. If you want a vendor to blame and a support chat for every question, keep renting, that is a real service. And you do not have to build to own: Allodra is the CRM I built, and you can take title to it once instead of renting it forever. Either road ends the same way, with your business running on something you hold outright. Run your own rent math in the analyzer first, because nobody argues with their own numbers. Already on GoHighLevel? The escape route is mapped in how to migrate without losing your data.
Whichever way you go, watch the build first. Then come tell me what you are building, the community is free on Skool, and there is a room full of people doing exactly this.
Now go be dangerous.
Always got your back.
RyMac.
